An embarrassing glitch has happened at Deutsche Postbank, when a safe was taken to be scrapped. The disposed of safe contained at least 100,000 Euros when it arrived at a Brandenburg steel factory. This mistake had to be put down to the “negligence of a member of staff” said a Postbank spokesperson when asked on Friday.
When the safe was unloaded from a truck at the Hennigsdorf Electric Steelworks North West of Berlin, it had suddenly started raining money reports the “Oranienburger Generalanzeiger” newspaper (Friday’s edition). The event had already happened on January 14th.
In the meantime, the police have returned the money to Postbank. The safe, which had been taken out of service during renovations at a Berlin branch of the bank in December, had not been completely emptied before being handed over to the disposal company, explained a speaker of Postbank. Immediately after Postbank had become aware of this incident, it had “taken all measures imaginable to retrieve the money”.
The incident would have consequences for the member of staff responsible, announced the speaker. A finder’s reward - in the amount regulated by law - would be paid to the relevant employee of the steelworks. However, Postbank would not yet know who had reported the find.
According to a statement by the police, the money was found by the last scrap examiner at the Electric Steelworks. The police had initially investigated against a person unknown because suspected theft. However, it had been established that no offence had been committed. No one was available for comment at Hennigsdorf Electric Steelworks.
